Big Big Train “A Flare On The Lens” Album Review by Jorge Pozo

Big Big Train album cover

It’s been a long and eventful journey for Big Big Train, from their early days to their transformational period following the unfortunate passing of David LongdonA Flare On The Lens marks their return to the live album scene, a comprehensive testament to their endurance and evolving artistry. Captured during two nights at London’s Cadogan Hallin September 2023, this album feels special, not only because it showcases material from both nights but also due to its reflection of the band’s growth and adaptation.

Opening with “Folklore”, the track is a near-perfect intro encapsulating the confidence and charm of the new lineup. Alberto Bravin’s prowess as a lead vocalist is immediately evident, and his chemistry with the band is tangible. The ensemble’s rendition of “Folklore” is both a nod to their past and an embrace of their present, demonstrating Bravin’sunique vocal stylings while maintaining the integrity of the original composition.

The album is not just a collection of live tracks but a carefully curated journey through Big Big Train’s expansive catalogue. “The Connection Plan” and “Curator of Butterflies” highlight this balance perfectly. Although there is some criticism about the running order, this seemingly incoherent approach serves to spotlight the band’s versatility and dynamism. The transition between tracks is fluid, keeping the listener engaged through varied tempos and moods.

An intriguing aspect of A Flare On The Lens is how Alberto Bravin and Nick D’Virgilio complement each other vocally. Tracks such as “Curator of Butterflies” exemplify this synergy, where Bravin’s powerful delivery meshes seamlessly with D’Virgilio’s nuanced singing. Throughout the album, this vocal partnership adds depth and richness, enhancing the overall listening experience.

One standout is the instrumental track “Apollo” from 2021’s Common Ground. It encapsulates Big Big Train’s skill in blending electric and acoustic elements. The band’s ability to execute these intricate arrangements live speaks volumes about their competence and cohesion as musicians.

The acoustic medley, featuring “Leopards”“Meadowlands”, and “Wassail”, provides a refreshing interlude. This segment exudes intimacy, displaying the band’s prowess in stripped-down settings. Nick D’Virgilio’s charismatic personality shines here, making the performance feel personal and engaging.

Of course, no Big Big Train concert would be complete without their more bombastic tracks, and “East Coast Racer”and “Victorian Brickwork” deliver on this front. The inclusion of the Big Big Train Brass Ensemble in tracks like “Drums & Brass 2023” and the aforementioned makes the live experience even more spectacular.

The final seven tracks from the first night’s performance present another layer of intrigue. Though some argue this approach muddles the album’s flow, it offers a comprehensive picture of the concerts. Notable here is “Telling the Bees”, a tribute to David Longdon that resonates deeply, demonstrating Bravin’s ability to carry forward Longdon’s legacy while making the song his own.

This release captures the essence of Big Big Train not just as performers, but as an evolving entity. Their current lineup appears solidified, showcasing their collective strengths across diverse musical landscapes. Despite some potential for confusion in the running order, A Flare On The Lens is a masterful depiction of the band’s live capabilities.

In conclusion, A Flare On The Lens is an essential listen for both long-time fans and newcomers. It bridges the past and the present, illustrating Big Big Train’s capacity for reinvention and resilience. With standout tracks like “Folklore”“Apollo”, and “Telling the Bees”, the album offers moments of both grandeur and intimacy.
