After the alternative rock band CHIEFLAND recently announced their new EP “Sentiment Valley” for November 8th with the release of the single “Blame”, they are now following up with “Bad Move”, another preview in the form of a modern emo-rock track that delves deep into the darkness of loss and longing.
Bad Move combines gripping vocals, unsettling tension in the guitar riffs, and pulsating drums into an endless cycle of pain and hope. “It’s a song about loss, that feeling that consumes you and won’t let go. You long for what once was—and with that, for the impossible. Because that state will never return,” explains lead singer Christopher Hiller.
For Bad Move, CHIEFLAND invited Christine Goodwyne from the US band POOL KIDS to collaborate. Some may be familiar with this math-rock-emo powerhouse from Florida, as the band recently supported LA DISPUTE on their tour in Germany. This is also how CHIEFLAND got to know the quartet: “We saw them live in Hamburg and were totally impressed by the band’s energy,” reflects bassist Lucas Keitel on attending the concert. “We were even more excited when Christine agreed to feature on our track.”
About CHIEFLAND
With two albums and three EPs released so far, CHIEFLAND is one of the figureheads of the German emo and alternative landscape. Founded in 2015, all members of the band come from different cities: Leipzig, Hamburg, Halle and Göttingen – sometimes more than four hours apart. This makes CHIEFLAND an exciting project that proves that the Band also works at a distance. The tour with ACRES (UK) through Europe in the fall of 2023 showed that CHIEFLAND are successfully going their own way despite the distance.
Since the pandemic and several member changes, CHIEFLAND have gradually moved away from the melodic hardcore of their debut “Wildflowers” (2019) and found a new niche in the mix of emo, alternative and post hardcore. The shoegaze influence in some of the more recent songs is also unmistakable. Looking at the songwriting and production, the quartet could easily pass for a US band. The impressive response to their latest single “Know That I’m Alive” (stream), which generated over 100,000 streams within just a few months – purely organically and without a label – shows that the sound resonates with overseas listeners.
CHIEFLAND have played a good 150 shows so far, some of them as support for BEING AS AN OCEAN, ACRES or HOLDING ABSENCE. The band’s biggest show to date was in front of 800 people at “Das Fest” in Karlsruhe.
For the production of their new material, CHIEFLAND brought on board Alan Day (FOUR YEAR STRONG). The quartet will also be on tour in November.
