Singer, songwriter, and ex-vocalist/co-founder of progressive metal giants Eldritch, Terence Holler is set to release his second solo album titled Next In Line on May 23 via Scarlet Records, a follow-up to his 2024 debut Reborn. Like Reborn, Terence revisits his musical roots from the ’70s and ’80s, drawing influence from the likes of Toto, Journey, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, and Boston, writing songs he wants to hear (and doing so with extreme passion and conviction), hoping his loyal fans follow in his glory.
I personally enjoyed his debut, Reborn, but Next In Line takes his creative efforts a full step forward, crafting extremely heartfelt yet powerful songs. I would say this album is the perfect storm of ’80s synth pop, electronica, arena rock, ’70s hard rock, and yes, even some prog/shred moments. Overall, the album covers everything Terence enjoys, and the album hits just right.
I will say if you are looking for an Eldritch-style album, proceed with caution, as there are some cheesy yet beautiful moments like the lyrics in the song The Ocean, which is literally about his love for watching the ocean. Most of the songs are about the ups and downs of love, his personal experiences, and passions—which is exactly why the songs come across so convincing and catchy as hell! I have never heard music with such variety in styles come together so perfectly.
There are definitely some rocking moments all over the album, and his unique and distinguished vocal style gives Next In Line its own identity. There is also a cover of Australian pop star Sia, called Chandelier, on the album—which I actually like better than the original version.
My personal favorites are the first single Stormy, 24Seven, A Miracle, and Crystal Eyes. But overall, this album is very special if you have an open mind. Terence makes no apologies for writing such off-the-wall songs and is without a doubt paving the way for a new genre of music by blending the styles that started him on his music journey up to what he currently enjoys. Overall, this is an absolute kick-ass album, so please take the time to listen to it, as Terence Holler has poured his heart and soul into making it.
