Kripticy “The Non-Return” Album review by Antoine Karam

Krypticy band members

Krypticy, the relentless force of death metal from Málaga, has finally unleashed their second full-length album, “The Non-Return.” Four years after their critically acclaimed debut, “Hideous Being,” fans have eagerly awaited this release. Their new work shows that they’ve managed to stay true to their roots while seamlessly incorporating progressive and thrash elements, crafting an album that’s both complex and brutal.

Opening with “Infected Pharaoh,” the album immediately asserts its dominance with a ferocious blend of death metal and thrash. The rhythm section, brutal and unyielding, lays the foundation for guitars that veer between razor-sharp riffs and blistering solos. Alex Guerrero’s guttural vocals are as powerful as ever, dragging listeners into the abyss from the very first note.

The second track, “Hypatia’s Heresy,” further solidifies Krypticy’s status as masters of their craft. The band’s ability to shift between fast, aggressive passages and slower, more oppressive rhythms defines their sound. This is more than just technical prowess; it’s a refined understanding of musical dynamics.

“Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is another standout track. It brings a heavier, more gore-infused sound to the mix. The vocals become even more guttural, and the overall atmosphere darkens. The band seems comfortable exploring different sub-genres within death metal, never allowing themselves to be confined to a single style.

The progressive inclinations of the band shine in “The Water Street Butcher.” The song’s structure is intricate, featuring a pounding drum and prominent bass lines provided by Thomas Schenk. The progressive base allows the band to experiment with their sound while staying undeniably true to their death metal essence.

As the album progresses, Pancho Vázquez’s drumming emerges as a standout feature. His work on tracks like “UGH!”and “Krypticy” is nothing short of a steamroller, providing a relentless backdrop to the other instruments’ technical flairs. The band’s cohesion is evident, each member playing a crucial role in creating a unified and powerful sound.

Lyrically, “The Non-Return” dives into themes of human suffering and the inevitability of fate. The band’s ability to weave tales of death, violence, and madness into their music adds depth to the already dark and oppressive atmosphere. Notable are the references to serial killers and other macabre stories, enhancing the chilling nature of the album.

While Krypticy embraces numerous influences, their sound remains distinctly their own. The technical precision of Sergio Álvarez on guitar is noteworthy. His melodic yet crushing riffs add layers to the band’s overall sound, creating moments of chaos and beauty. The solos are reminiscent of early Slayer, demonstrating a respectful nod to their influences while forging their own path.

The closing track, “Virgins Recently Fucked Sacrifice,” encapsulates Krypticy’s ability to blend old-school death metal with melody and technicality. The track offers multiple tempo changes and intricate riffs, making it a fitting finale to an album that refuses to remain static. The band’s willingness to push the boundaries of their genre is commendable and evident throughout the album.

Production-wise, Thor Nay at Wave Nation Studio has done an excellent job in recording, mixing, and mastering the album. Every instrument is highlighted without overshadowing the others, providing a balanced yet powerful sound that amplifies the album’s raw energy.

“The Non-Return” by Krypticy is a must-listen for fans of extreme death metal. The album’s blend of technical, brutal, and melodic elements offers an intense auditory experience. While there’s room for more innovation, the band’s current evolution is compelling and promises even greater things in the future.
