Unveil the secrets of Hermitage, when Temperance presents their new live album “From Hermitage to Europe”. Their new lead singer Kristin Starkey takes a hold of the band’s cycle of rebirth. Temperance’s duets are a true standout in the symphonic metal atmosphere. This live album features the band’s duo of Michele Guaitoli (Visions of Atlantis) and Kristin Starkey (Twilight Force) along with founding member / guitarist Marco Pastorino as a third voice. This was also the lineup for their latest full album release, “Hermitage – Daruma’s Eyes Pt 2”. It was no surprise that the new live album heavily featured the latest tracks; however, there’s still plenty of reason for fans of past Temperance albums to want to check this release out!
To start, this live album is a collection of songs recorded from Temperance’s 2024 European tour in support of the Hermitage album. This album is also used as a kickoff for their highly anticipated headline tour of Europe in 2025. While not clear which tracks are from which cities, you can hear mentions of Munich or Budapest during some stage banter in between songs.
The album features twelve total live songs, plus an intro, with half being devoted to the latest full album release and is the theme of this live album. While that may be considered the meat of the release, older fans might be most interested in the older songs being performed by the current lineup. Fans both old and new will be delighted to hear how well, albeit slightly different, the songs sound with Kristin’s distinct voice.
To start the concert, we get an intro track that builds upon the excitement as the band takes stage. You can hear some claps from the fans as anticipation builds before the first track, Daruma. The live guitar soars until it settles into the vocals as the concert starts and the claps of the crowd coincide with the first of many epic sing-along choruses. The next track goes back to an older single and the track described as “best representing our identity.” This track was also released as promotion for the album with a live video!
The album continues to mix between the latest release and past singles. All past songs are featured from their three most recent albums before Kristin became lead vocalist. Conveniently skipping anything from 2016 or earlier, which coincides with the last Temperance live album “Maschere”. The album also features new drummer to the band Marco Sacchettoand original bassist Luca Negro.
Each song features a crisp live guitar sound along with vocals that show off live nuance in each singer’s voice—a real nice treat for a fan of live music. There is extensive use of symphonic elements that the band simply cannot recreate live without a backing track, but in the scope of this live album, these symphonic elements don’t take center stage. The vocals are upfront and center in the mix, which is exactly what a Temperance fan wants with that blistering guitar and bumping bass/drums. There are moments where the symphonic elements shine in the mix, at the appropriate timings, and you can even hear the narration of Arjen Lucassen taken from the album. Some of the highlights, however, are the moments when you can hear the crowd chanting or clapping along to the music, truly capturing the live concert feel.
The album also features a live rendition of the epic climax from the Hermitage album through the song “Into the Void”. It feels like an appropriate way to end the string of new songs before finishing the set with three classic Temperancesongs. If the live album had not yet put a big smile on your face, I guarantee this ending will. The most catchy and sing-along songs come through strongly here. The band reminds the crowd and listener that new singer Kristin is from New York, but the band doesn’t let you go without an Italian song, Diamanti. Ending on the highest note seemingly possible, Pure Life Unfolds shows that Temperance is a band ready to break out into a venue near you!
