Thermality has returned with their sophomore album, “The Final Hours,” showcasing their growth and evolution since their formation in 2020. The band, which gained initial acclaim with their debut album “Before I Get To Rest” and their EP “Tales From The North,” has taken significant strides in solidifying their sound and identity in the melodic death metal scene. Their latest work, recorded at the prestigious Studio Fredman and masterfully mixed by Fredrik Nordström, promises to be a milestone in their burgeoning career.
The album opens with the acoustic instrumental “MMXXIV,” a melancholic prelude that highlights the intricate interplay between guitarists Noel Hoflund Jonsson and Walter Hamilton. This serene beginning is abruptly transformed as “Weeping Angels” bursts forth with aggressive riffs and evocative themes of isolation and inner struggle. Ludvig Sommar‘s vocals here are commanding, and the track’s rhythmic complexity sets the stage for the rest of the album.
“Thorns of Salem,” following swiftly, continues to underscore the band’s adeptness at blending melody with aggression. Both tracks evidence the band’s shift from their thrash roots to a more refined melodic death metal approach. “Fire Will Reign” exemplifies this with rapid verses balanced by variations in tempo, showcasing an increased confidence in their guitar solos. The song’s atmospheric qualities, enhanced by sound effects and spoken word sections, draw the listener deeper into the album’s narrative.
The first single, “Stranger,” marks a distinct departure with its jangling synths and dynamic shifts between rapid-fire riffs and more stripped-back, half-sung sections. The influence of bands like In Flames is evident, yet Thermality injects their personality into the track, creating something both familiar and fresh. “Windigo” and “Clones” continue this trend, demonstrating the band’s willingness to experiment with introductions and allow their songs to evolve naturally.
As “The Final Hours” progresses, tracks like “Forsaken,” “Nightfall,” and “Guardian” maintain a high level of musicianship but fall into a comfortable pattern, lacking the unexpected twists that could elevate the album further. Despite this, the dexterous guitar work remains impressive, and the band’s infectious energy is undeniable.
The album’s closing track, the two-part “Divinity,” reintroduces acoustic elements interwoven with intense sections. Hampus Sätterlund delivers his best drumming on the album here, and lyrically, the track explores themes of existential search and purpose. Part 1 is dystopian, conveying a sense of inevitable doom, while Part 2 offers a glimmer of introspective hope, ending the album on a thoughtful note.
“The Final Hours” positions Thermality as a band confidently finding their footing in the melodic death metal genre. The album’s strong influence from bands like In Flames and Children of Bodom is clear, yet the young band shows potential for developing their unique voice. The intricate melodies, aggressive yet controlled riffs, and thematic depth suggest a bright future ahead.
Standout tracks include “Weeping Angels,” “Stranger,” and “Nightfall,” each offering a glimpse into the band’s evolving sound and artistic identity. The incorporation of diverse elements from acoustic interludes to classical motifs, such as the snippet of Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5” in “The Hunter and The Nightmare,” adds layers of complexity and keeps the listener engaged.
“The Final Hours” may have its moments of predictability, but it remains an enjoyable and promising album that showcases Thermality‘s growth and potential. With their youth and talent, they are well-positioned to continue refining their sound and making significant strides in the metal scene.
