WEATHER SYSTEMS “Ocean Without A Shore” Album Review by Marc Prince

Weather Systems

As a long-time fan of Anathema and the deeply talented Daniel Cavanagh, the announcement of WEATHER SYSTEMS‘ debut album, “Ocean Without A Shore,” sparked considerable anticipation. With the band’s hiatus and the subsequent formation of two new projects, Vincent Cavanagh‘s The Radicant and Daniel‘s WEATHER SYSTEMS, the excitement to hear the evolution of their distinct styles was palpable. Given Daniel’s profound emotional and musical journey, this album arrives as a confluence of past experiences and new beginnings. Released seven years after Anathema’s “The Optimist,” “Ocean Without A Shore” had high expectations to meet.

“Synaesthesia”, the album opener, immediately captivates as it harkens back to the sonic essence that characterized Anathema’s golden period. The track carries the guitar hardness reminiscent of songs from “Alternative 4” and “We’re Here Because We’re Here.” The raw energy and thoughtfully crafted melodies are a nod to the band’s transformative years, and Daniel‘s vocals, though always in his brother’s shadow, resonate with a heartfelt authenticity that enriches the entire listening experience.

The second track, “Do Angels Sing Like Rain?”, demonstrates Daniel Cavanagh’s gift for crafting memorable yet intricate music. This song is particularly fascinating, featuring a powerful riff entwined with a propulsive beat, and marks a poignant reference to near-death experiences. The seamless integration of shimmering keys and an emotionally charged chorus makes this a standout piece that’s both thought-provoking and deeply moving.

One cannot overlook “Untouchable Part 3,” which serves as both a continuation and a homage to “Weather Systems,” Anathema’s acclaimed 2012 album. The emotional weight and orchestration of this track create a profound sense of nostalgia while also pushing the boundaries of progressive rock. Similarly, “Are You There? Part 2,” connects directly to “A Natural Disaster,” and its orchestral arrangement amplifies the haunting beauty of the original theme.

By the midpoint of the album, “Ghost In The Machine” shines with its excellent vocal harmonies and musical progression. Melding elements of the band’s past with a fresh perspective, the song could easily be part of Anathema’s later discography. It is here that Daniel demonstrates his unique ability to bridge the past and the present, creating a cohesive narrative that is both familiar and innovative.

The second half of the album sees WEATHER SYSTEMS truly coming into their own. “Still Lake” is particularly atmospheric, driven by subtle piano chords and evolving into a full-bodied, light-filled crescendo. This track, in particular, encapsulates the ambient essence and emotional depth that Anathemafans have cherished over the years.

“Take Me With You” is a gripping ballad that showcases Daniel‘s lower vocal range, offering a deeply introspective experience. The song’s melancholy yet hopeful tone is enhanced by its engaging melody and structured progression, marking it as a pivotal moment on the album.

The title track, “Ocean Without A Shore,” is arguably one of the best pieces Daniel Cavanagh has written. The filtered vocals and slow-build electronic rhythm create a transcendent listening experience. This track takes its time, evolving into a climax that encapsulates the spiritual and emotional journey that Danielalludes to in the press release. It’s a reflective piece that encapsulates the very essence of this new chapter.

Closing the album is “The Space Between Us,” which begins with tribal vocal harmonies before transitioning into a cosmic exploration of sound and emotion. The song beautifully oscillates between introspection and dramatic flair, leaving listeners with a sense of resolution and anticipation for what’s to come from WEATHER SYSTEMS.

WEATHER SYSTEMS‘ debut album “Ocean Without A Shore” is a triumphant manifestation of Daniel Cavanagh’s talent and emotional resilience. The album skillfully combines elements of nostalgia with innovative compositions, resulting in a record that feels both like a homage to Anathema and a bold step forward.
