Album Review by Jorge Pozo

“Look At You Now” by The Flower Kings is not just another addition to their extensive discography; it’s a testament to their enduring legacy in the world of progressive rock. This album, their 16th studio release, maintains the band’s unmistakable signature sound while infusing it with a sense of nostalgia and a dash of modernity.

As I delve into this album, I can’t help but feel like I’m embarking on a journey through the annals of prog history. The Flower Kings have been crafting their unique blend of melodic progressive rock for nearly 30 years, and it’s a joy to witness how they’ve evolved while staying true to their roots. The music on “Look At You Now” is a mesmerizing tapestry of genres, with each track offering a different facet of their musical prowess.

Classic rock vibes intermingle with moments that channel the grandeur of a musical; Roine Stolt’s vocals, in particular, evoke a sense of rock opera akin to Queen at times. There are hints of space-rock-meets-opera, infusions of psychedelia, and intricate jazz-inspired segments. The technical complexity and multilayered arrangements are a testament to the band’s instrumental proficiency.

What sets The Flower Kings apart is their use of various keyboards, from the grand piano to the iconic Hammond organ and the ethereal Mellotron and Moog synthesizers. These keys, along with the ever-present vocals, guitars, bass, and drums, create a sonic landscape that’s both rich and diverse.

“Look At You Now” doesn’t strive to reinvent the wheel, but rather, it reaffirms the band’s distinctive sound. In an era where some bands endlessly chase the elusive “new and fresh tone,” The Flower Kings remain steadfast in their recognizable style, and it works beautifully. The album feels like a continuation of their musical journey, and it’s a testament to the enduring appeal of their sound.

The album’s themes are uplifting and often explore important contemporary issues. There’s a strong focus on nature and humanity’s relationship with it, as well as introspection about our actions and their consequences. Light serves as a recurring motif, symbolizing hope and the search for a better world.

The standout track, ‘Day For Peace,’ featuring Marjana Semkina’s ethereal vocals, is a poignant highlight. It’s a call for unity and change, beautifully framed within the album’s overarching themes.

While the epic-length tracks of their past might be absent here, the album retains the signature shifts in musical themes and moods. From soft, easy-listening melodies to technically-complex instrumentals, it’s a rollercoaster ride of musical exploration.

In essence, “Look At You Now” is a testament to The Flower Kings’ unwavering dedication to their craft. It’s a reflection of a band that has left an indelible mark on the world of progressive rock. While it may not redefine the genre today, it undoubtedly did so in the past. This album is a reminder of why they are celebrated, and it’s certainly worth more than just a listen.
