Orange Goblin “Science Not Fiction” Album Review by Antoine Karam

Orange Goblin Band Members

Orange Goblin has been at the forefront of the stoner metal scene since the mid-90s, crafting a formidable catalog that blends a variety of rock influences. Yet, despite their prolific output and loyal fanbase, they’ve not always received the recognition they deserve. A lengthy six-year gap since their last release, 2018’s “The Wolf Bites Back,” heightened anticipation for their latest effort, “Science, Not Fiction.” Given such a hiatus and the challenges brought forth by the pandemic, the album emerges as a much-awaited statement in Orange Goblin’s storied discography.

The opening track, “The Fire at The Centre of The Earth Is Mine,” immediately sets the stage with an atmospheric intro that transitions into gritty, heavy riffing. Ben Ward’s raspy vocals cut through the dense instrumentation, guided by Harry Armstrong’s robust basslines and Chris Turner’s thunderous drumming. This song beautifully encapsulates what Orange Goblin does best—melding raw power with a touch of the cosmic.

“Ascend The Negative” follows with an infectious groove. The interplay between Joe Hoare’sbluesy guitar licks and Turner’s precise snare hits keeps the track alive and kicking. The track stands out not only for its impeccable musicianship but also for Ward’s vocal performance, which brims with bravado. This is Orange Goblin in full stride, capturing the essence of their live energy in a studio setting.

However, “Science, Not Fiction” isn’t without its moments of redundancy. “False Hope Diet” kicks off with an intriguing guitar arpeggio but soon falls into a somewhat dated lyrical territory, addressing themes like anti-social media and conspiracy theories. While the instrumentation remains compelling, the track’s message feels tired, even self-parodic at times. It shows that even seasoned bands can occasionally misstep in their pursuit of contemporary relevance.

That said, “Cemetery Rats” marks a return to form, opening with an eerie piano and choir arrangement before diving into a full-throttle metal onslaught. The blend of doom-laden dirge and thrash metal vigor makes it a standout track. Ward’s vocals here are commanding, adding a layer of menace to the already dark atmosphere. The track is a testament to Orange Goblin’s ability to inject new energy into familiar formulas.

“The Fury Of A Patient Man” is another highlight, with its punk-infused tempo showcasing Hoare’s dynamic guitar work. Although brief, the track packs a punch and keeps the album’s momentum rolling. However, “The Justice Knife”feels more like a filler, lacking a distinct identity despite competent execution. The vocal delivery becomes predictable, making it one of the less memorable moments on the album.

The album’s closer, “End Of Transmission,” is an ambitious, sprawling piece that leaves a lasting impression. Starting with a haunting ostinato guitar, the track evolves into a densely layered epic that epitomizes Orange Goblin’sprogression. It is here that both the production by Mike Exeter and the mastering by Peter Hewitt-Dutton shine, capturing the band at their most polished and expansive.

Overall, “Science, Not Fiction” is a testament to Orange Goblin’s resilience and evolving sound. While not every track hits the mark, the album contains numerous high points that reaffirm the band’s place in the metal pantheon. Balancing between familiar heavy metal grit and exploratory soundscapes, the album showcases a band willing to push boundaries even this deep into their career.

The album scores a commendable 8.5 / 10. It is a solid addition to Orange Goblin’s catalog that will undoubtedly satisfy longtime fans and perhaps even draw in some new listeners.
