Forty Years of Rewriting Metal
Few bands have changed the vocabulary of heavy music as deeply as Meshuggah. Formed in Umeå, Sweden, in the late 80s, they built a sound on complex polyrhythms, dissonance, hypnotic repetition and crushing physical weight. Albums such as Destroy Erase Improve, Chaosphere and Nothing redefined what metal could be, and songs like “Future Breed Machine,” “Rational Gaze” and “Bleed” became touchstones for generations of players. Their influence runs through progressive and technical metal, and the entire djent movement traces back to them. “Clockworks” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance in 2018, and their latest album, 2022’s Immutable, topped both the UK Rock & Metal Albums chart and Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart.
The current lineup is Jens Kidman (vocals), Fredrik Thordendal (guitar), Mårten Hagström (guitar), Tomas Haake (drums) and Dick Lövgren (bass).
Our Take
This is one of the strongest metal packages of 2027. Thrash veterans Testament and cosmic death metal favorites Blood Incantation make a perfect bridge between metal’s past and future, with Meshuggah in the middle as the band that changed the rules. A Meshuggah show at Red Rocks should be something special.
