Album review by Jorge Pozo

Teramaze‘s latest offering, “Dalla Volta,” takes listeners on an exhilarating journey through a soundscape that expertly fuses the band’s past and present, showcasing their prowess in creating captivating progressive metal music. Hailing from Australia, Teramaze is known for their unique blend of thrash metal, melodic metal, and progressive rock. The band consists of founder, and vocalist/guitarist Dean Wells, guitarist Chris Zoupa, bassist Andrew Cameron, drummer and Nick Ross and vocals by Nathan Peachey.

“Dalla Volta” is a remarkable album that combines new material, reimagined versions of classic songs, and previously unreleased demos, providing a comprehensive listening experience for both new and long-time fans of Teramaze. From the opening track, “Navigate in Solitude,” the band sets the tone with its signature heavy sound and infectious hooks, melding thrash and melodic metal seamlessly.

The album’s two singles, “Chaos in the Way” and “These Crystal Walls,” demonstrate the versatility of Teramaze’s musical style. “Chaos in the Way” is a hypnotic, melodic metal masterpiece with soaring vocals, while “These Crystal Walls” delves into a darker, heavier sound without sacrificing the band’s knack for crafting compelling and intricate songs.

“Dalla Volta” also revisits and reimagines fan favorites like “Shadows II,” an updated version of the 1998 classic “Shadows” from the album “Tears to Dust.” The new rendition adds a modern edge to the song while preserving the nostalgic charm that made it a hit on American radio. The inclusion of piano versions of “Waves” and “Broken” gives listeners a chance to appreciate these songs in a more stripped-down format, revealing the intricate layers of Teramaze’s compositions.

The 2017 demo versions of “Weight of Humanity,” “From Saviour to Assassin,” “Fight or Flight,” and “Are We Soldiers” offer an intriguing glimpse into the band’s creative process. These earlier versions are rawer and more intense compared to their counterparts on the 2019 studio album “Are We Soldiers.” The demos showcase a heavier, more menacing aspect of Teramaze’s sound, emphasizing the band’s ability to explore a variety of musical styles and production values.

In conclusion, “Dalla Volta” is a testament to Teramaze’s growth and evolution as a band, offering a unique and immersive listening experience for fans old and new alike. The album’s fusion of new material, reimagined classics, and rare demos make it a must-have addition to any progressive metal aficionado’s collection.

I would say that “Dalla Volta” deserves a solid 8 out of 10. This rating reflects the album’s excellent songwriting, skillful musicianship, and captivating listening experience.
