Tzompantli, the traditional and indigenous metal collective led by Xibalba guitarist Brian Itztlakamayeh Ortiz, has released Temilotzin, a special acoustic EP issued by 20 Buck Spin to mark Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
The EP puts the traditional music that runs through Tzompantli’s death doom front and center. Sung entirely in Náhuatl, with many lyrics drawn from the words of Náhuatl warrior-poets, it features drums, huehuetls, death whistles, flutes, shells, shakers and guiros alongside guitars and bass. Its three songs are exclusive to this release and will not appear on the band’s third album, due in 2027.
“This release is deeply personal. Not only was it written to pay homage to our ancestors and Indigenous peoples, but also in the aftermath of losing my best friend and dog, Soprano, along with other family and friends who would begin their next journey.”
Brian Itztlakamayeh Ortiz
The EP is named after Temilotzin, a warrior-poet remembered for his poem about friendship and for his close bond with Cuauhtémoc, the last Mexica emperor.
“May our ancestors, family, and friends remain close. May their voices endure. May we continue to remember.”
Brian Itztlakamayeh Ortiz
Temilotzin is available on Bandcamp as a pay-what-you-want release this week here, and on all streaming platforms.
