Maryland rock institution Clutch have announced their fourteenth studio album, Wasted Lands, due out January 22, 2027 via the band’s own Weathermaker Music. Alongside the news, the quartet have released the album’s riff-heavy title track, “Wasted Lands,” together with an official music video.
Written and recorded at the band’s longtime base in Frederick, Maryland, the Doom Saloon, Wasted Lands marks Clutch’s first collaboration with producer Machine since 2015’s Psychic Warfare. On the title track, Neil Fallon spins one of his trademark character sketches, this time about a creature so vile that even H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King couldn’t have imagined it. Some say it’s a government experiment, others an angel or an omen of the end times. The locals simply call it Neil Patrick Fallon.
Explaining where the lyrics came from, Fallon says:
“The inspiration for the lyrics in Wasted Lands came about when it was brought to my attention that someone had been dragging my name on FaceBook (weird, right?). Apparently, I had reneged on a free t-shirt and dinner. I think it was a prize in a pay to play contest. Not to overstate the obvious, but it was a load of horse hockey. Many people tried to explain to this person that it was not me and that they had been hustled. But they simply would not believe it. So I thought, screw it, no half-measures. You want a monster? Let’s give you one.”
Behind Fallon’s storytelling, Jean-Paul Gaster, Dan Maines and Tim Sult lock into a classic Clutch groove, complete with a carefully placed kick-drum hit that Gaster knew would set crowds off. As he recalls:
“There’s a part where Neil says, ‘Vegetable, mineral, man, or beast.’ And I put a bass drum on, ‘man or beast,’ and Machine thought that was kind of weird. He was like, ‘Man, you’re covering up the vocal!’ And I said, ‘No, that bass drum is gonna make the crowd go nuts, I guarantee it.’ And it does, because there’s nothing more exciting than having a big bass drum slam through a PA, and Neil singing a vocal on top of it. I mean, I get goosebumps from that, you know?”
Across the new record, Clutch keep their riff-driven foundation intact while leaning into a sharper melodic side. Songs such as “Colorado Fuel and Iron,” “Stage Fright” and “Loaf ‘N Jug” are built as much on chord progressions as on individual riffs, while “Beware the Fever” puts a banjo on a Clutch album for the very first time. That part comes straight from a rough demo Fallon played and Gaster recorded during a writing session; after several attempts to re-record it, the band kept the original take.
Lyrically, the album opens amid the rubble of the Georgia Guidestones on “The Drifter Returns” and closes under an exploding star on “The Message Is Clear,” passing along the way through Colorado’s Highway 50, abandoned company towns, corporate greed, creature-feature horror and deep space. It is also the band’s first full-length since 2022’s Sunrise on Slaughter Beach, and was written with the stage in mind after Clutch scrapped two earlier batches of songs that felt too studio-bound.
Speaking about the album, the band share:
“Exploded monuments, haunted coal towns, robber barons, time cops, a chestburster, fifteen tons of antimatter and a creature called Neil Patrick Fallon. Wasted Lands came from one clear intention: write a great rock record that will make fans go nuts when they hear these songs live, while leaving enough space in the creative process to follow the unexpected turns that keep Clutch exciting to us and our fans after thirty-five years together.”
Wasted Lands will be available on standard black vinyl, cassette and CD, plus several exclusive editions: red vinyl and red CD (clutchmerch.com), Yellow Smoke vinyl (US independent retail), Green Smoke vinyl (Amazon), Sea Blue Smoke vinyl (TalkShopLive) and blue vinyl internationally through HMV (UK), JBL (Germany), FNAC (France) and JB (Australia).
Fans in the US will get their first live taste of the new material next month, when Clutch hit the road for a 16-date headline run with support from Slomosa and Blood Vulture. In January, the band head to Australia with special guests Corrosion of Conformity. Tickets are available at clutchmerch.com.
