“When I was in college, I was in a fraternity, and we had this chant that went, ‘Fun, fun, fun, the fun has just begun.’ I always thought that would be a really cool way to start a metal song, especially with a heavy breakdown hitting right after it. That was really where the idea for ‘Hairy Buffalo’ was born.”
Cody Parks
Parks says the song grew into a tribute to his college years. After nearly a decade writing in Nashville, where lyrics are expected to be airtight, he wanted to try something different: “None of the lyrics to this song will make any sense to anybody except the guys who actually went through all of that stuff with me back in college. And I kind of like that.”
What Is Country Metal?
Led by singer and songwriter Cody Parks, the band formed in 2019 and fuses Southern country culture with the power of classic heavy metal, a sound they call Country Metal. Their influences run from country storytelling to Metallica, Ratt and Pantera, delivered with crushing guitars, driving rhythms and big hooks.
Their breakthrough came with “Thunder Cash ’69,” a mashup from the 2023 covers EP Smothered & Covered that went viral, topped the iTunes Rock chart in three countries and reached numbers 2 and 3 on Billboard’s Rock and Hard Rock Digital Song Sales charts. That success led to their deal with Frontiers, and in 2026 they toured the US as direct support for Steel Panther on the “Twenty Twenty $ex Tour.” Earlier releases include Country Metal, Vol. 1.
Our Take
Country and metal have flirted for years, but few bands commit to the idea as fully as this one. “Hairy Buffalo” is pure party metal, a song that refuses to take itself seriously and is better for it. After touring with Steel Panther, they know exactly how to win over a crowd, and the debut album should be a lot of fun.
