The long-awaited moment has arrived: Cryptopsy, the Canadian legends of extreme metal, have unveiled their highly-anticipated and cataclysmic new album, ‘As Gomorrah Burns,’ through Nuclear Blast Records. This marks the tech-death masters’ eighth album and their first full-length release in over a decade. The album lands like a gut-punch of brutality, as evidenced by previously released singles such as ‘Flayed The Swine’ and ‘In Abeyance.’
Now fully exposed to the world, ‘As Gomorrah Burns‘ seethes with brutal savagery across its eight tracks. It’s pure, unrelenting death metal crafted without limitations or remorse, built around a concept that pits the Biblical tale of Sodom and Gomorrah against the modern-day Internet, both serving as sources of invention and cesspools of exploitation. The stories recounted in the album are based on real-life incidents – online harassment, cults, disinformation, isolation, and intimidation – all twisted cunningly to amplify their impact.
Today, Cryptopsy has unveiled a lyric video for their track ‘Godless Deceiver,‘ which guides listeners through a gruesome narrative of extreme violence.
Vocalist Matt McGachy provides insight into the song, stating: ‘The lyrics of ‘Godless Deceiver’ are extremely vulgar and disturbing. While researching for the album, I came across the story of Fabiane Maria de Jesus, a 33-year-old woman from Guarujá, Brazil, a city near São Paulo.
She was brutally murdered by a mob who believed she was responsible for kidnappings in the area, following a Facebook post by a local news outlet. The newspaper had reported a woman kidnapping children, and many believed her motives were linked to witchcraft. A sketch of the woman the news outlet claimed was the child abductor resembled the victim. In the end, it was revealed that she was innocent. This mob of vigilantes killed her without any valid reason. It highlights the importance of never blindly trusting what you see, read, or hear on the internet.
I decided to write the lyrics from the perspective of the mob, which is why they are straightforward. They depict brutal lyrics about an exceedingly violent act. The mob never questions if they are doing the right thing; they simply act in unison.
It is one of the most disturbing songs I have ever penned.’
