Danish metal outfit Gradience have unveiled a video for “Agony,” a track from their debut full-length Anomaly, out now on Metal Blade Records.
“People who know us by now should be aware that we like to mix things up and see what we can make work,” says guitarist and vocalist Jakob Lærke Harris. “‘Agony’ is our ‘fun’ party anthem song and our attempt at making the nastiest riff work with some upbeat synth neatly packaged with rap and screams to keep people moving at our shows.”
On their debut, the usually clear-cut boundary between apocalyptic, sludgy blackened death metal and dark urban trap-rap gets pulverized. Emotive and intimate vocal lines blur the lines further, over a sound picture heaving with glacial synths and hypnotic detail. It may confuse anyone who likes their genres tidy, but at the heart of it is an authentic friendship.
How The Band Came Together
In 2022, vocalist Gavin Mistry and Harris struck up an immediate creative rapport at a Copenhagen show for local deathcore act Cabal. Gavin had been signed to Sony in Denmark with his grunge, rock and trap duo KXDS, a project stalled by the pandemic. Before that he had been involved with an underground hip-hop label and collective.
“I had gained a little performance experience and was known as the authentic trap-rapper with emotional and melodic bits,” says Gavin.
“It was an immediate musical and creative match,” says Jakob. “I admired Gavin’s vivid lyrics and his ease, switching between delicate melody lines and hard flows; it just opened so many doors to explore in the songwriting process.”
The tension of Jakob’s extreme metal growl finds new context against Gavin’s rhythms and rhymes, backed by the hammering rhythm section of drummer Frederik Kjelstrup Hansen and bassist Patrick Petersen.
