Long-running black metal juggernaut Krallice are streaming Scour Order in its fiery entirety, on the eve of its official release September 18 via Profound Lore Records.

Marking their 16th full-length, the record sees Krallice revisit their old instrumentation, with Colin Marston and Mick Barr on guitars and McMaster on bass, though Marston’s vocals remain. The result is raging and dark, dense but also expansive.

It also marks a return to Profound Lore, who released the band’s first three albums, after 12 full-lengths and 4 EPs put out independently, with help from Gilead and P2 for various physical versions.

The Critical Response

Treble placed it among the band’s essential releases, arguing it sits comfortably next to Dimensional Bleedthrough, Go Be Forgotten and Crystalline Exhaustion, and describing it as a summation of everything Krallice has done so far that delivers a thrilling start to a new era.

No Clean Singing noted the songs feel tighter and tauter than usual, spending less time in meditative meandering and more pushing relentlessly forward, singling out “Kill The Guardian” and “Indecipherable Divinities” as early highlights and calling the album destined to rank among the band’s best work.

Everything Is Noise wrote that the group wraps their signature experimental black metal around the listener like a hungry boa constrictor and refuses to let go, concluding that the record reminds longtime fans exactly why they gravitated toward the band in the first place.

Invisible Oranges observed that after half a decade of excursions into lo-fi, psychedelic rock, progressive rock and synth worship, Krallice are back to as close to their original sound as possible without it becoming regression. Stereogum, writing on lead single “Living Useless Ritual,” said the players are all total virtuosos, though it is hard to even notice once you get caught in the time-warping rush of the sound.

Nearly Two Decades In

Krallice began in 2007 in Woodhaven, Queens, New York City, as a two-guitar collaboration between Marston and Barr with the intention of making a black metal record. After recording the first album with Lev Weinstein on drums in 2008, the project quickly became an actual band, adding Nicholas McMaster on bass and vocals and playing its first shows.

Nine albums and three EPs followed with Marston on guitar, Barr on guitar and vocals, and McMaster on bass and vocals. The style was always dense and polyphonic, but after Years Past Matter in 2012 and the Hyperion EP in 2016, the sound opened up, with less focus on black metal and hypnotic long songs. The stretch from Ygg Huur in 2015 through Mass Cathexis in 2020 runs darker and less predictable.

By 2017 the band started collaborating with Dave Edwardson of Neurosis on vocals, who contributed all lyrics, vocals, synths and cover art ideas for Loum and later appeared on Mass Cathexis and Mass Cathexis 2.

2021’s Demonic Wealth was a pivot, with Marston on all guitars, synths and songwriting and Barr as standalone vocalist and lyricist. Its lo-fi production and synths on every song, including half the record with no guitar at all, opened the sound further. The next four albums and an EP saw Barr switch to bass and vocals, McMaster to guitar and vocals, and Marston to synths, additional drums and vocals, pushing things in a more atmospheric direction.

In 2026, Krallice enter their next era with Scour Order.
