Four Decades of Rhythmic Mayhem

Meshuggah formed in Umeå in 1987 and started from thrash metal foundations before moving into much stranger territory. Albums such as Destroy Erase Improve, Chaosphere and Nothing set out the ideas that would define them: polymetric riffs, displaced accents and extended-range guitars. That evolution continued through Catch Thirtythree, obZen, Koloss and The Violent Sleep of Reason, and the band earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Metal Performance with “Clockworks.” Their ninth album, Immutable, arrived in 2022, topped the UK Rock and Metal Albums chart and reached number one on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart.

Our Take

Few lineups make more sense than this one. Periphery and Vildhjarta both built their sound on ideas Meshuggah pioneered, so every night will feel like a family reunion for the djent generation, with the originals closing the show. Ending a 40th anniversary tour at Wembley is a huge statement for a band that never chased the mainstream, and it shows how far that once-strange rhythmic language has travelled. If you are in Europe, mark November 6 on your calendar.

Meshuggah are: Jens Kidman (vocals), Mårten Hagström (guitars), Dick Lövgren (bass), Fredrik Thordendal (guitars), Tomas Haake (drums).
