North Sea Echoes, the project pairing Fates Warning singer Ray Alder with Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos, have released a video for “Good Enough”. The song comes from their latest album How To Cast A Shadow, out now on Metal Blade Records.
Alder explained how the track and its video came about:
“‘Good Enough’ was one of the first songs written for How To Cast A Shadow. It’s a simple yet beautiful song, and it quickly became one of my favorite songs that Jim and I had written together. While we never intended for it to be released as a single or video we decided that while we were together for a photo shoot we would also shoot a video for this. I think that we both agreed that this song was just too nice not to be shared with others.”
How To Cast A Shadow follows the duo’s 2024 debut Really Good Terrible Things and widens the project’s identity rather than repeating it. “This record is a bit heavier,” Matheos said, “with several more songs featuring real drums, played by Dennis Leeflang. It wasn’t necessarily intentional or planned, just the way things shaped up and how they emerged this time.”
The album moves between the straightforward rock of “All That Comes After”, the slow build of “A Time Of Innocence And Purpose”, and the ballad “Villains Or Saints”, crossing genre lines without losing its through line. Reviewers have picked up on the melancholy running underneath the record and the way the writing leans on emotional weight rather than technical complexity, a notable choice for two musicians rooted in progressive metal.
Both players bring long histories to the project. Alder has fronted and co-written for Fates Warning for 37 years, appearing on ten albums between 1988’s No Exit and 2020’s Long Day Good Night, with seven more records alongside Redemption, two solo albums, and the band A-Z, which debuted in 2022. Matheos co-founded Fates Warning, whose 1984 debut Night On Bröcken also came out on Metal Blade. Beyond thirteen albums with that band, he has released solo work, four albums as OSI with former Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore, and Kings Of Mercia, launched in 2022.
