Beast In Black Unveil Power Ballad “Lost Children” Ahead of European Tour

Beast In Black have released “Lost Children,” a sweeping power ballad and the latest preview of their fourth studio album, Fear The Beast. The song arrives days before the band’s European headline tour, which kicks off on October 26 at London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town with Sonata Arctica and Frozen Crown.

The track goes back to the band’s long running fascination with Kentaro Miura’s manga Berserk, this time to its Lost Children chapter. Frontman Yannis Papadopoulos pushes his voice to new heights, and the video was again directed by award-winning filmmaker Katri Ilona Koppanen, who also shot the clip for the album’s title track.

“‘Lost Children Chapter’ is one of my absolute favourite parts of Berserk manga, if not my favourite. It had an enormous impact on me when I first read it, some 20 years ago, and ever since I wanted to write songs (or at least one!) about it. I wanted to find my own way to tell this important, tragic and heart-wrenching story, while staying true to its delicate child-like purity and meaningful core.”

Anton Kabanen, guitars

Kabanen points to Rosine, the girl at the center of the story, as the source of its power: she becomes the antagonist and commits terrible acts, yet she is a vulnerable child pushed into a tragic situation. “It’s not a straightforward story of good versus evil,” he says. “The emotions are contradictory, and that’s precisely why it’s so deeply moving.” He calls Koppanen’s work “the most soulful Beast In Black music video to date.”

From Alien to Berserk

“Lost Children” is a sharp contrast to “Fear The Beast”, the Alien-inspired single that introduced the album in September with its biomechanical Xenobeast and dance-beat heavy metal. Since forming in 2015, Beast In Black have built their sound on that mix of 80s synths, huge choruses and anime and sci-fi imagery across three albums, Berserker, From Hell With Love and Dark Connection, plus a collaboration with Diablo tied to the game’s crossover with Berserk. Fear The Beast is also the first album with new lead guitarist Markus Venehsalo.

Our Take

A full ballad is a bold choice for a band best known for neon-lit, dance-floor heavy metal, but it pays off. Papadopoulos has always had the range for this, and a song this patient lets him show it. Coming right after the snarling title track, “Lost Children” suggests Fear The Beast will be the band’s most varied record yet.

Line-up: Yannis Papadopoulos (lead vocals), Anton Kabanen (guitars, vocals, programming), Markus Venehsalo (guitars), Mate Molnar (bass), Atte Palokangas (drums).
