Finnish doom band Fimir have released “Old Master,” a new single and official video from their second album, Cosmic Heavy Doom. The record arrives on November 27 via Argonauta Records on CD and digital formats.
“Old Master” follows the first single, “Pain of the World.” Where that song set human suffering against the indifference of the universe, this one takes aim at a more modern threat: our growing dependence on technology and the loss of personal autonomy in a digital world. The track features Christoffer Clavebring of Acolytes of Moros, who also appears in the video.
“We have traded our souls for algorithms and our autonomy for the glow of the screen. To oppose this development, we wrote the song ‘Old Master’, which is the second single from our upcoming album Cosmic Heavy Doom. ‘Old Master’ is the sound of the breaking chains, a defiant reclamation of humanity against the tyranny and greed and the digital rot that tries to own our minds.”

About Cosmic Heavy Doom
The album spans seven tracks and 43 minutes. It opens with the brief invocation “Necronaut,” moves through the crushing “Pain of the World” and “Old Master,” sinks into the 15-minute “Snakepipe Hollow” and ends with “The Eternal Cosmic Judgement And the Collapse of Stars.” The band describes it as monolithic doom steeped in occult dread, existential unease and Lovecraftian cosmic horror.
“This is not merely an album; it is a sonic omen, a grim prophecy of the dark ages that await us all.”

Classic Doom With a Modern Target
Fimir draw on the classic lineage of Candlemass, Trouble, Saint Vitus and Cathedral, with the gothic weight of Type O Negative and Tiamat. Argonauta Records, the Italian label behind a long roster of stoner, doom and post-metal acts, is the band’s label, and Fimir call the label its “long-time partner-in-doom.”
Our Take
Doom metal usually looks to the past for its horrors, which makes “Old Master” stand out. Turning the genre’s slow, crushing weight against screens and algorithms is a smart move, and at seven and a half minutes the song gives its riffs room to grind. With a 15-minute centerpiece still to come, Cosmic Heavy Doom is shaping up as one for patient listeners who like their doom traditional but their themes current.
