Europe to Release First New Album in Nine Years, Come This Madness, on September 25 Lead Single and Music Video “One On One” Available Now
After nearly a decade since their last full-length release, legendary Swedish rock group Europe is returning with their twelfth studio album. Titled Come This Madness, the highly anticipated record will be unleashed on September 25through Silver Lining Music and Hell & Back Recordings. Proving they refuse to remain stagnant, the band has crafted what promises to be their most forceful and unyielding statement yet.
The album tackles themes of global tension and personal reflection across tracks like “The Cult of Ignorance,” the title track “Come This Madness,” and the lead single “One On One.” Available now, “One On One” serves as a bold reintroduction to the group. The song kicks off with an orchestral arrangement before exploding into a heavy, riff-centric hard rock anthem built on driving bass lines and massive vocal melodies. Written during a period of worldwide lockdown, the track blends the band’s classic arena-rock roots with a revitalized, modern edge.
“‘One On One’ is definitely one of my favourite tracks from the album,” says Europe’s founding member and frontman Joey Tempest. “The power and feel is fresh, but some of the melodies bring me back to where it all began. Lyrically, it’s perhaps not filled with as much escapism as early Europe. These lyrics automatically ended up being more of a reflection of the times we live in today. Ever since ‘One On One’ was just a demo, we’ve stayed with it… never gave up on it, and elevated it to a place where it belongs: a high-flying, classic hard rock track.”
To complement the single, Europe enlisted director Patric Ullaeus to create a visually gripping music video. The cinematic piece stars acclaimed actor Peter Stormare (known for roles in Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and Armageddon) delivering a highly emotional and vulnerable performance as a broken, solitary character.
“We always knew Peter loved rock music, and when his name came up it just felt right,” continues Tempest. “We wanted to approach this from a different angle – something more stripped back and unexpected.”
Production for Come This Madness took place at RMV Studio in Stockholm, a premier facility established by Benny Andersson and Ludvig Andersson. The album features notable guest contributions from Tobias Forge of Ghost and Opeth‘s Mikael Åkerfeldt. Acclaimed producer Tom Dalgety helmed the project, heavily integrating himself into the band’s creative process, while legendary engineer Mike Fraser handled the final mixing duties to perfect the record’s massive sound.
“It was a true pleasure working with Tom,” exclaims Tempest. “He’s creative, musical and incredibly intuitive – he really became a sixth member of the band during the writing and recording of this album. We even invited him to co-write on some of the songs.”
In addition to preparing for the album’s launch, Europe is embarking on a massive international tour to commemorate the 40th anniversary of their monumental album, The Final Countdown. The anniversary trek begins on September 30 in Glasgow, bringing together the band’s historic legacy with their newly ignited creative fire.
