Warren Haynes has shared a stirring live video for “Thorazine Shuffle,” the iconic Gov’t Mule song, taken from his forthcoming symphonic album, Dreams & Songs: A Symphonic Journey. The GRAMMY Award-winning vocalist, songwriter, guitarist and producer reimagines the fan-favorite with a sweeping orchestral arrangement that pushes the piece into bold new territory.

Originally released on the 1998 Gov’t Mule album Dose, the song takes on a new life in this arrangement, crafted by John Medeski. Haynes explained:

“John Medeski did the arrangement for ‘Thorazine Shuffle,’ and his unique take on music in general was what led me to ask him to arrange that particular piece. He was able to strike a balance for ‘Thorazine Shuffle’ that takes it a little further avant-garde than most of the songs but still has that beautiful symphonic quality as far as the arrangement is concerned that really transports it into another place. His counter-melodies and all the different textures that he put in that song elevated it in a way that I wasn’t expecting. It’s probably the most unique arrangement on the record.”

Dreams & Songs: A Symphonic Journey arrives September 18 via Provogue/Artone Label Group in Europe and Evil Teen Records in the U.S. The 16-track collection draws from across Haynes’ remarkable catalogue and career, gathering music from Gov’t Mule, the Allman Brothers Band, The Dead, his solo work, and more.

The album was recorded in 2019 at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Haynes’ hometown of Asheville, North Carolina. He was joined by a band of seasoned improvisers — Oteil Burbridge on bass, John Medeski on organ and keys, Jeff Sipe on drums, and Greg Osby on saxophone — along with Edwin McCain and Jasmine Muhammad on background vocals and the 64-piece Asheville Symphony Orchestra. The set follows previously released performances of the Grateful Dead classic “Shakedown Street” and Gov’t Mule favorites “Raven Black Night” and “Banks of the Deep End.”

Haynes will bring his acclaimed Dreams & Songs Symphonic Experience to Nashville for two nights at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center with the Nashville Symphony on March 11 and 12, 2027. Until then, he stays busy on the road with Gov’t Mule: the GRAMMY-nominated quintet is touring this summer, including a co-headlining run with blues-rock titan Joe Bonamassa through August 23, before heading out on the newly announced Dreaming The Same Dream Tour with Ziggy Marley, a 16-date co-headlining outing that kicks off September 23 in New York City and wraps October 17 in Dallas.
