Film composer and producer Tyler Bates has joined forces with British synth-wave act Gunship and drummer Dave Lombardo, the veteran behind the kit for Slayer, Mr. Bungle and Misfits, for a new single called “Revolution.exe.” The track arrives on Bates’s newly launched label, Gravel And Echo Recordings, and pairs a pulsing hard-rock and electronic backbone with Gunship’s retro-futurist signature and Bates’s cinematic sensibility. Its lyrics aim squarely at power, control and complacency, wrapped around a hook built to stick.
Bates traced the collaboration back to an earlier project the two had worked on together:
“My history with Gunship began a few years ago when we wrote ‘Berserker’ for the Dark Nights: Death Metal album. ‘Revolution.exe’ picks up where we left off. Dave Lombardo’s drumming is pure fire. This song is a banger. I hope y’all love it!”
– Tyler Bates
The song came together remotely, with Bates and Gunship writing and producing across different time zones. It was mixed by Grammy-winning engineer Robert Carranza and mastered by Abbey Road Studios engineer Stefan Brown. “Revolution.exe” also serves as the first release from Gravel And Echo Recordings, which Bates has signaled will house more of his solo work and production projects going forward.
Bates is an American composer and producer known for his film scores and his collaborations with artists such as Marilyn Manson, Evanescence, Jerry Cantrell, Mastodon, Bush and In This Moment. His film credits stretch across more than three decades and include John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool 2. He also co-wrote and co-produced three Marilyn Manson albums, most recently 2024’s One Assassination Under God: Chapter 1 and 2026’s Chapter 2.
Lombardo, born in Havana, Cuba, co-founded Slayer in Los Angeles in 1981. Rolling Stone once dubbed him the “Cuban speed demon” on its list of the 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time, while Modern Drummer crowned him “The King.” His long resume also includes recorded and live work with Grip Inc., Fantomas, Suicidal Tendencies, Mr. Bungle, Misfits, Testament, Empire State Bastard and Dead Cross, among many others.
