Temic lived up to the hype with their chart-topping debut, and the international prog supergroup has grown considerably on their second album. Anticipation is running high for Ceiba, the group’s thunderous ode to loss, and the band has now shared its second advance single and video, “Broken.”
Vocalist Fredrik Klemp described a song that came together almost instantly:
“‘Broken’ is built around overwhelming emotion and honesty. We wrote the song in 30 minutes. It came together instinctively. There was no need to overthink it or make it into something more than what it already was. We simply allowed it to be what it is. I think that’s where the song gets its strength.”
– Fredrik Klemp
For Klemp, that raw quality shaped how he approached the vocal:
“The honesty of this song became very important to my vocal performance. It connects to experiences and emotions that are deeply personal to me. Rather than distance myself from them, I wanted to let those emotions come through in my voice. My performance sits deliberately close to the edge, fragile and unsteady, as if it could give way at any moment.”
– Fredrik Klemp
Before joining forces in 2023, the members of Temic had already made their names in progressive metal and rock. The group brings together current and former members of Devin Townsend, Mike Portnoy’s Shattered Fortress, Neal Morse Band, Haken, Shining, Maraton and Big City. As technical as it is, Ceiba stays grounded in raw emotion. In Mayan culture, the titular tree is considered sacred for the way it links the earth, heaven and the underworld.
“We love how the image of the Ceiba connects to the album’s overarching theme of loss.”
– Diego Tejeida
Directed by Cesar Mindiburu, the “Broken” video marks the point where Ceiba cracks open from a surge of grief. The song mourns the end of a codependent relationship, carried by little more than ghostly synths and electronic drums that beat like a heart on life support, with Klemp pushing his vocal control to its aching limit. As he put it:
“There is no real resolution to ‘Broken’. I think that’s part of why it feels so honest. It captures the point where what we carry quietly becomes too heavy to contain and the vulnerability of recognizing that same struggle in someone else.”
– Fredrik Klemp
