Swedish lycanthro punk outfit Wolfbrigade will release their new full-length Howl From Underground on October 9 through Metal Blade Records. First single “Cold War Bootlicker” is out now with a video, and pre-orders are live.

The band explained the track:

“‘Cold War Bootlicker’ is about false opposites. We divide the world into competing camps, but the machinery never changes. Two heads fighting over the same body. Every master speaks a different language of obedience.”

With the amps still warm from 2024’s comeback Life Knife Death, the veteran punk-metal quintet return with their loudest and thickest sounding record to date. That was deliberate. On their twelfth LP, the first three of which came out under the Wolfpack name between 1996 and 1999, the band set out to shake up their usual process.

“As the songs started to fall into place, we decided to do something we hadn’t done in many years,” the band explains. “For the last decade we’ve recorded, produced, and mixed our albums ourselves. This time we wanted to work with someone from outside the band whose work we respect and who we felt would understand what WOLFBRIGADE is about.”

That job went to Lawrence Mackrory, a trusted collaborator of Meshuggah, Katatonia, Paradise Lost and Bloodbath, working at Necromorbus Studio, the converted Baptist church where Watain and Mayhem shaped their own records.

The move may have been encouraged by the return of drummer David “Dadde” Stark, who originally handled the d-beats for the band between 2002 and 2015. “Everything clicked immediately. The chemistry was still there,” the band says.

The term lycanthro punk runs through their 30-plus year history, a coinage that nods to their d-beat raw punk roots while adding bloodthirst and superhuman strength to the mix. It remains their preferred musical identity, and they define it themselves:

“Lycanthro Punk has always been about that force which refuses to be tamed. The same force that runs through myth, folklore, and philosophy throughout history. The wolf is one name for it. Dionysus another. A restlessness that survives civilization.”
