Christian metal pioneers Stryper have shared a new lyric video for “Go Tell It On The Mountain,” taken from their Christmas album The Greatest Gift of All, out now via Frontiers Music Srl. The album has only been available in physical formats since its release last year, so this marks the first time the song can be streamed or downloaded.

The song is a traditional hymn, and Michael Sweet says its relatively small number of covers is exactly what made it attractive:
“‘Go Tell It On The Mountain’ is a traditional hymn that tells the story of the birth of Jesus. Not many people have covered this song, so it seemed like a perfect opportunity to heavy it up and do our own version. Merry Christmas and God Bless you all.”

Forty Years in the Making
A full Stryper Christmas album was a long time coming. The band released the single “Reason for the Season” back in 1985, and fans kept asking for more over the decades that followed. The Greatest Gift of All finally answered them, pairing five traditional songs with five originals. Michael Sweet, who also produced the record, explained the idea behind it:
“We wanted to make an album of five traditional songs and five original songs. To put our own spin on our own Christmas album and not follow the pack, so to speak. We could not be more pleased with how it turned out!”

We covered the album’s arrival last year, including the lyric video for “On This Holy Night”, and you can read our album review. The holiday record sits alongside a very busy 2026 for the band, who released their 18th studio album, Throne of Thorns, and spent the fall on a US tour.
Founding members Michael Sweet, Robert Sweet and Oz Fox are joined by bassist Perry Richardson. With more than 10 million albums sold worldwide and multiple Billboard Top 40 hits, the band’s legacy now spans four decades.

Our Take
It is only October, but Stryper have a point: if you want a metal Christmas song in your playlists this season, it helps to make it available now. Keeping this album physical only was a bold choice in the streaming era, and opening the door with a single that few rock bands have touched is a smart way to test the idea. A Stryper Christmas record is about as natural a fit as metal has to offer, and this release gives anyone who missed the CD an easy way in.
Stryper are: Michael Sweet (lead vocals, lead and rhythm guitar), Robert Sweet (drums, percussion), Oz Fox (vocals, lead and rhythm guitar), Perry Richardson (vocals, bass).
