Grammy-nominated metalcore veterans As I Lay Dying have released “The Cost To Stay,” the latest single and official video from their self-titled album As I Lay Dying, which arrives on February 5, 2027 via Napalm Records. The song moves from a suffocating calm to an explosive release, and it deals with self-erasure and the price of sacrificing who you are to keep a false peace.

Vocalist Tim Lambesis says the song is about recognizing when holding on has become the problem:
“‘The Cost To Stay’ is about realizing that sometimes the life you’re trying so hard to hold together is the very thing you need to leave behind. For a long time, I confused endurance with strength, compromising until I was losing pieces of myself just to avoid conflict.”
Tim Lambesis
He adds that the same willingness to change, instead of repeating the past, sits at the heart of the new album.
A Continuation and a Reset
This is the band’s first self-titled record in a career that now spans 25 years and eight studio albums. The band describe it as “both a continuation and a reset,” bringing together melody, aggression, speed, heaviness and atmosphere without being tied to a single era. It was produced by Chris Clancy and Lambesis, with “No Way Out” produced by Dusten Boles and featuring guest vocalist CJ McCreery of Immortal Disfigurement. Corey Meyers, who has shaped the band’s visuals since “My Own Grave,” created the artwork.
“The Cost To Stay” follows the double release of “Polarized” and “Retribution,” which we covered when the band announced the record in September. The album also includes the earlier singles “Echoes” and “If I Fall”.

Our Take
Five songs in, the album’s shape is getting clearer, and “The Cost To Stay” may be the most personal of the batch. The slow build from restraint to release suits a lyric about finally walking away, and it shows the band are leaning into dynamics instead of relying only on speed. A self-titled record is always a statement, and these songs suggest a band trying to define itself on its own terms.
As I Lay Dying are: Tim Lambesis (vocals), Chris Clancy (bass, vocals), Don Vedda (guitar, vocals), Bill Hudson (guitar), Tim Yeung (drums).
